Grundsätzlich ist es so, dass Apples AirPlay 2 Protokoll, welches unter anderem für die Erstellung von Multiroom-Speaker-Verbünden oder auch das direkte WLAN-Streamen von einem Apple-Gerät auf einen externen Lautsprecher zuständig ist, von den Speaker-Herstellern lizensiert werden muss, damit es dort angeboten werden und funktionieren kann. Nun ist es drei Entwicklern jedoch offenbar gelungen, das proprietäre Protokoll zu knacken und somit prinzipiell auf jedem Ausgabegerät verfügbar zu machen, wenn dieses beispielsweise über einen Raspberry Pi angesprochen wird, auf dem eine App zum Dekodieren des Audiostreams läuft. Genau hier liegt momentan auch noch der Schwachpunkt des Bestrebens: Zwar wurde das Protokoll angeblich geknackt, eine solche App gibt es aber momentan noch nicht. Die drei Entwickler haben jedoch angekündigt, diese kurzfristig zu entwickeln.

Vermutlich ist all dies jedoch ein Kampf gegen Windmühlen, den am Ende dann doch wieder Apple gewinnen dürfte. So ist nach Bekanntwerden des erfolgreichen Dekodierens des Audiostreams davon auszugehen, dass Apple das Protokoll weiterentwickeln und entsprechend wieder sicherer machen wird. Auch das Vorgängerprotokoll AirPlay 1 wurde bereits vor einiger Zeit geknackt, wenngleich hiermit kein Streamen direkt von einem iOS-Gerät, sondern lediglich aus iTunes heraus möglich war. In der breiten Masse wird sich das Knacken ohnehin vermutlich kaum auswirken, betrachtet man die bereits verfügbare Anzahl von mit AirPlay 2 kompatiblen Speakern.
