Zwar wird jeder Mac mit einem vorinstallierten Videoplayer von Apple, dem Quicktime-Player ausgeliefert, dennoch haben viele Nutzer auf ihrem Mac auch den beliebten VLC Player installiert. Dieser kann ab sofort auch nativ auf einem Mac mit Apple Silicon Prozessor, aktuell also dem M1-Chip genutzt werden. Erforderlich ist hierfür die Version 3.0.12.1 des VLC Players, die wiederum zunächst die zeitgleich veröffentlichte Version 3.0.12 voraussetzt. Mit dieser kommen neben der Optimierung für den M1-Chip auch verschiedene Fehlerbehebungen auf den Mac, die sich unter anderem um Tonstörungen beim Start der Wiedergabe kümmern. Auch die Benutzeroberfläche wurde weiter für macOS Big Sur optimiert.
