War Facebook vor einigen Jahren noch das gefühlt coolste Unternehmen der Welt, steht der Name heute vor allem für einen bedenklichen Umgang mit dem Thema Datenschutz. Zudem droht in verschiedenen Regionen der Welt eine Zerschlagung, da sich der Konzern mit seinen weiteren Diensten wie WhatsApp oder Instagram eine gewaltige Machtposition erarbeitet hat. Hier versucht man nun wohl mit einer Maßnahme gegenzusteuern, die auch schon Google vor einiger Zeit angewendet hatte. Wie die Kollegen von The Verge berichten, soll Facebook planen, seinen Firmennamen zu ändern, um den Fokus auf "das Metaversum" des Unternehmens zu verdeutlichen.

Wenig bekannt is, dass FACEBOOK in reinen Großbuchstaben der generelle Firmenname ist, während facebook in Kleinbuchstaben der Name des sozialen Netzwerks ist. Bereits hiermit sollte deutlich gemacht werden, dass es sich bei Facebook eben schon lange nicht mehr um das soziale Netzwerk handelt, als das man einst gestartet war. Und genau diese Vielfältigkeit mit Tätigkeiten in verschiedenen Bereichen soll ein neuer Firmenname nun noch deutlicher unterstreichen. Dieser wird derzeit allerdings noch extrem geheimgehalten. Die Kollegen von The Verge spekulieren dazu:

A possible name could have something to do with "Horizon", the name of the still-unreleased VR version of Facebook-meets-Roblox that the company has been developing for the past few years. The name of that app was recently tweaked to Horizon Worlds shortly after Facebook demoed a version for workplace collaboration called Horizon Workrooms.

Möglicherweise wird der Schritt bereits in der kommenden Woche bekanntgemacht, wenn Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg am 28. Oktober auf der Connect-Konferenz seines Unternehmens auftreten wird.

Vergleichbar wäre der Schritt mit dem, den Google im Oktober 2015 vollzog, als man "Alphabet Inc." als neuen Namen präsentierte, unter dem fortan verschiedene Produkte und Dienste wie Google,  Gmail oder YouTube firmierten. Für die meisten Nutzer ist Google jedoch als Synonym geblieben. Dies dürfte sich bei Facebook wohl ähnlich verhalten.
