Should you write a general one-size-fits-all resume, which you can submit anytime, anywhere, for any job posting? The Fact: It is a horrible mistake! The truth: Hiring decision-makers have to read through up to four hundred resumes a day! Thus they throw away any resume which is not definitely targeted to the employment being offered.

Insisting on the Duties-and-Responsibilities resume approach, will make sure that your resume gets dumped in the garbage! Organizations don't care anymore about what you were assigned to do at previous positions. Instead, they have to see what verifiable accomplishments you have made.

These days, companies need to be given the unique job title you are hoping to apply for - and a general resume never has this. On top of that, they instantly need to discover what positively makes you a better choice - but a general resume causes you to appear just like the other 499 general resumes they've already seen submitted.

Resume text such as "accomplished", mean nothing. They make you sound cliche and don't present you in a positive way. The same is true of a term such as "hard worker". The proper text target things you achieved while working for your prior positions and in addition how valuable you can be to this potential hiring decision-maker.

A quarter-century ago, people were told that each resume has to have a group of bullet-point duties and responsibilities beside every occupation we have ever done - and the higher the number the better. Not today! Today, organizations plan to only allow 15 seconds (sometimes not even that) when glancing through your resume. Do not use the duties/responsibilities resume technique!

Resume text like for instance "team player", have no value. They are cliche and do not position you in a positive light. This is also true for a statement such as "reliable". The right terms focus on what you did while at your former employment plus how beneficial you could be to this potential employer.

Years and years ago, people were taught that every resume has to contain a group of bullet-point duties and responsibilities for any job we've ever been hired for - and the more the better. Not now!
