Apple stellt macOS Server offiziell ein

Schon seit Jahren ist das Betriebssystem macOS Server ein komplettes Nischenprodukt bei Apple. Entsprechend stiefmütterlich wurde es zuletzt auch behandelt und vermutlich wissen die Wenigsten, dass es überhaupt existiert. Zuletzt wurde es nich mal mehr als reines Betriebssystem, sondern als App im AppStore breitgestellt. Nun hat Apple in einem Support Dokument bekanntgegeben, dass macOS Server zum heutigen Tage endgültig eingestellt wurde. Damit ist die aktuelle Version 5.12.2 des Server-Betriebssystems auch seine letzte. Die wichtigsten Dienste aus macOS Server werden künftig in das allgemeine macOS migriert, welches künftig sowohl auf Clients als auch auf Servern zum Einsatz kommen soll. Apple hatte bereits mit High Sierra damit begonnen, beliebte macOS Server Funktionen, wie den Caching Server, den File Sharing Server oder den Time Machine Server in macOS zu integrieren. Vor allem das Mobile Device Management (MDM) wird künftig jedoch über eine Drittanbieter-App erledigt werden müssen. Apple bietet entsprechende Support Dokumente für die Migration.

Wundert mich, dass es überhaupt solange gebraucht hat. Server war bei Apple immer Nische. Selbst als sie noch einen Server anboten. Und der Konzern hatte nie Vertrauen in das eigene Produkt.

Schade. Während Microsoft versucht, das Komplettpaket zu bieten (Server, Software und Endgeräte) fokussiert Apple nur noch die Endgeräte.

Da ich die Tage gefragt wurde: Obwohl wir bis auf Rugged Devices nun komplett auf Apple setzen, wird die Serverinfrastruktur weiterhin aus Redmond und Palo Alto gestellt.
