Das "Metaversum", also die weitere Verschmelzung von realer und virtueller Welt, wird als einer der ganz großen Trends der kommenden Jahre gesehen. Während schon länger spekuliert wird, dass auch Apple an verschiedenen Projekten in Richtung Augmented und Virtual Reality arbeitet, drängt vor allem auch der Facebook-Mutterkonzern Meta in diese Richtung. Dort setzt man große Hoffnungen auf die bereits in Entwicklung befindliche AR-Brille, aus der Mark Zuckerberg nach Aussage eines ehemaligen Projektmitarbeiters den "iPhone-Moment" seines Unternehmens machen möchte. Dadurch erhoffe man sich neben eines Innovationsschubs auch die Entwicklung eines neuen Images, welches das Unternehmen in einem neuen Licht dastehen lasse (via The Verge).

Die AR-Brille aus dem Hause Meta soll angeblich unabhängig von einem Smartphone nutzen lassen, aber dennoch auf externe Rechenleistung angewiesen sein. Eine Hauptfunktion soll die Möglichkeit sein, mit als Hologramme dargestellten Personen kommunizieren und interagieren zu können. Die erste Generation soll sich ab 2024 vor allem an Early-Adopters und Entwickler richten. Noch im selben Jahr soll auch eine günstigere Version auf den Markt kommen, welche seinen Träger dann, mit einem Smartphone verbunden, über eingehende Nachrichten und weitere Meldungen informieren soll. Ein Ansatz also, der sich ähnlich wie der liest, der auch bei Apple gehandelt wird.
